Travelling soon - any advice if hostels accept cards in San Marino or I have to give them cash
Thought everywhere in Europe took cards, but San Marino still runs a bit old-school. My hostel near the city gates was great, but they only took cash for the final payment. No drama, just something to plan for. I’d say bring some euros with you or withdraw when you arrive - makes check-in smoother and saves you from awkward ATM hunts.
Only a few hostels or B&Bs in San Marino actually use proper card systems. I stayed at one with a working terminal, but they charged a 3% fee. Others didn’t accept cards at all. It’s not uncommon for smaller places here to keep it cash-only. I always ask during booking if cards are accepted, and carry at least €100 just in case.
Booked online and assumed I could just tap to pay - nope. Got there and the guy at the front desk said they “prefer cash.” Their terminal wasn’t even plugged in. Luckily I had euros on me. My advice: message ahead and confirm. Even if they technically have a machine, it’s not always reliable. Better to arrive ready with cash.
Stayed in a guesthouse-style hostel in the Old Town and they only took cash. Said their machine was down, but I’m not sure if it ever worked. I had to run to an ATM and take out euros. After that, I just asked upfront before booking. Most smaller places expect cash - it’s just easier for them.
