Travelling soon - any advice if hostels accept cards in Iceland or I have to give them cash
Iceland was the most cashless trip I’ve done. Stayed at Bus Hostel Reykjavik and another near Myvatn, and both preferred card. The receptionist even said they don’t handle cash at all anymore. My card worked fine at every stop along the Ring Road. So, no need to stress - your card is good enough everywhere, including hostels.
Don’t stress about cash in Iceland. Hostels, hotels, buses, shops - all take cards. The hostel in Reykjavik city center even had a self-check-in kiosk that only worked with card. If you land at Keflavik Airport, skip the ATM unless you really want cash for tips. Even in small towns like Vik, hostels accept cards easily. Just make sure your card doesn’t block international charges.
I traveled the Ring Road and stayed in hostels in Reykjavik, Hofn, and Akureyri. Not once was I asked for cash. My Revolut card worked everywhere, even for tiny charges like coffee at gas stations. In Iceland, hostels and guesthouses are very professional about card payments. If anything, cash is almost unnecessary. I carried some ISK but barely touched it.
In Iceland, cards are the norm everywhere, including hostels. I stayed at KEX Hostel in Reykjavik and used my Visa tap-to-pay. Same in Akureyri - no one asked for cash. ATMs from Landsbankinn and Arion Bank are around, but honestly I never needed them. Even buses take contactless cards. So unless you really want krona coins, hostels are 100% card-friendly.
