Not sure if I should carry coins for public transport in Liechtenstein or if card payments are common. Advice?
Most of the time cards worked, but one morning in Balzers the bus card reader was down and the driver only wanted coins in Swiss francs. I had to run into a bakery to break a CHF 20 note. Later I used the Landesbank ATM in Vaduz to keep smaller cash handy. It’s reliable, but glitches happen, so I’d say don’t rely 100% on cards even if they usually work.
I thought the transport in Liechtenstein was super modern. The LIEmobil buses all had card readers, and even contactless Visa worked fine from Vaduz to Malbun. Ticket machines at Schaan station also accepted cards. I only kept a few Swiss francs in coins, but barely needed them. I used a Raiffeisen ATM once for backup cash. Compared to other countries, it’s one of the easiest places for tourists - I basically went cashless.
I stayed in a hostel in Triesenberg and used LIEmobil daily to Vaduz. On the first day, I paid with Swiss francs, but the driver gave change in coins only. After that, I tapped my Revolut Mastercard and it worked perfectly every time. When I took the cross-border bus into Buchs, Switzerland, both CHF cash and card were accepted. I also withdrew Swiss francs at the LLB ATM near the Kunstmuseum in Vaduz just in case. Honestly, it was easy - no real need for much cash.
Liechtenstein buses are run by LIEmobil, and they’re very organized. You can pay directly with a credit or debit card on the green buses running between Vaduz, Schaan, and Balzers. They also accept Swiss francs and euros in cash, but coins are preferred since change can be limited. Tickets bought at machines in Schaan or Vaduz bus stations take both cash and cards. ATMs from LLB (Liechtensteinische Landesbank) and Raiffeisen are easy to find in Vaduz. Carry a little cash for small routes, but cards work fine on most regular services.
