Not sure if I should carry coins for public transport in Guernsey or if card payments are common. Advice?
I liked how simple Guernsey buses were. From St Peter Port to Pleinmont Point, I paid £1 in cash and the driver gave me a paper ticket. No apps, no cards - but it worked fine. NatWest ATMs in Market Square dispensed sterling easily. It felt straightforward, like stepping back in time in a good way.
I stayed in St Peter Port and took the bus to Vazon Bay daily. The driver asked for £1 each time, cash only. My Revolut card didn’t work because there was no machine - just a cash tray by the driver. I ended up pulling notes from the HSBC ATM near the harbour and breaking them into coins at a Co-op shop. Honestly, it was very old-school compared to London or Jersey.
Guernsey buses are cash-only for the most part. You pay the driver directly in GBP coins or notes, usually £1-£2 per ride. There’s no metro system. Some buses accept prepaid puffinpass cards, but tourists mostly use cash. ATMs from NatWest and HSBC are common in St Peter Port for sterling withdrawals. Cards aren’t accepted on the buses themselves.
