Wondering how to pay for metro and bus rides in Gibraltar - cash only, or do cards work too?
The buses in Gibraltar were cheap and easy. I caught #10 from the airport into town with just £1.80 in coins. It dropped me near Casemates Square, and I hopped off right at the center. Simple, cash-only, but very straightforward. Staying near Ocean Village, I found buses reliable and much cheaper than taxis.
I found Gibraltar’s bus system backward. No cards, no apps, just coins. I stayed near Europa Point and had to keep running to ATMs because the bus drivers refused £20 notes. Even in 2025, they haven’t moved to contactless. It feels outdated compared to Spain just across the border. If you don’t carry coins, you’ll struggle.
I stayed at The Rock Hotel and used buses into town daily. Always cash to the driver - I paid in UK pounds, and it was fine. No cards accepted. Even at the airport bus stop, I asked about contactless, and the driver said “cash only.” Gibraltar is modern in many ways, but buses are old-school. Keep coins handy.
Gibraltar is tiny and has no metro. The main way around is the blue city buses that connect the airport, border, town, and Europa Point. I stayed near Casemates Square and used bus #2 and #10. Tickets are £1.80 single or £2.50 return, and the driver only takes cash (Gibraltar pounds or UK pounds). Cards don’t work on the bus. Taxis are also cash-based.
