Can I use a card to pay for taxis in Vatican City, or should I carry local cash?
In early May I took a taxi from St. Peter’s Square back to central Rome. I used my Maestro debit card at the station kiosk, but the onboard ride required €8 in cash. The taxi didn’t have a POS terminal. I recommend travelers bring euros in bills - cash covers both local taxi fares and unexpected surcharges. Save the card for hotels or restaurants.
Arrived by train at Roma Termini in June, then flagged a taxi to Vatican City. The driver asked for “cash or app?” I offered Visa but was told “cash only, please.” I ended up paying ZTL zone supplement in euros. Card payments are fine in Italy but Vatican taxis operate like local ones - they prefer cash. I carried small notes (€5-€10) for flexibility.
During a work stint in Rome through April, I grabbed a private taxi into Vatican City. My Mastercard was accepted at the terminal but transaction had an awkward DCC prompt - resulting in a poor exchange rate. Afterwards I used ATM cash for day rides. Vatican taxis rarely offer card machines onboard, so cash remains king. I now withdraw euros before arrival to avoid surprises.
Took a taxi from Rome's Fiumicino airport to Vatican City in May. Driver accepted Visa but slapped a €5 surcharge for card use. Getting cash was easier with ATMs in Rome. Inside Vatican City itself, taxis are super rare - you’ll likely book from Rome and pay there. My advice: carry at least €20-30 in cash for short fare supplements and tips. Cards work but expect hidden fees; cash is smoother for local hops.
