Can I use a card to pay for taxis in Luxembourg, or should I carry local cash?

My experience with taxis in Luxembourg was flawless when it came to cards. Every vehicle I rode in had a contactless terminal, and the drivers didn’t hesitate. I even asked one if cash was better, and he laughed, saying most people use cards. Luxembourg is a wealthy, highly digital country, and the system works accordingly. For taxis specifically, I never saw a single driver refuse card. It’s one of the few places in Europe where you truly don’t need cash.

Luxembourg is extremely card-oriented, and taxis reflect that. I never carried cash and didn’t miss it. From airport rides to trips across the city, drivers all had reliable terminals. They even accepted American Express, which is rare in many countries. If you’re debating whether to bring euros for taxis, I’d say don’t bother. Card is standard here, and cash is almost irrelevant for daily transport. I felt more comfortable relying on digital payments than physical money.

My trip to Luxembourg was smooth in terms of payments. I stayed near the train station and used taxis frequently. Every single driver accepted cards, and I often just tapped my phone with Apple Pay. Nobody seemed surprised. Even when I had a late-night ride back from Grund, the machine worked fine. Honestly, Luxembourg is a place where you don’t need to worry about carrying much cash at all, at least for taxis and general daily expenses.

Luxembourg is one of the most card-friendly countries I’ve ever been to. Every taxi I used, from the airport to Kirchberg and even across the border to France, had a working card reader. The machines all took Visa and Mastercard, and many accepted contactless. I didn’t withdraw any cash during my stay because it was unnecessary. If you’re visiting Luxembourg, you can absolutely rely on your card for taxis and just about everything else.
