ATMs in Liechtenstein keep asking Charge in EUR or Charge in USD - what does that mean? Shows high charges for this

Using a Sparkasse ATM just across from the Liechtenstein Center, the message popped up asking to be charged in my “home currency.” It looks safe but isn’t. If you accept, you’re paying their bad rate. If you choose EUR, your home bank does the math. I compared later-accepting conversion was nearly 8% worse. Liechtenstein is pricey already, don’t give away more money through these ATM tricks. Stick with EUR every time.

At a Bank Frick ATM near Balzers, I was charged extra because I didn’t understand the conversion screen. The USD option seemed logical since my card is US-based, but the exchange was awful. Later, I tried again and chose EUR, and my Monzo card gave me the proper Mastercard rate. The difference was noticeable. In Liechtenstein, ATMs often default to EUR for tourists, so just decline conversion and avoid being overcharged.

I tried a VP Bank ATM in Schaan, and the same screen came up. It offered me a “guaranteed conversion” into USD. If you say yes, they apply their own rate with a big markup. If you stick with EUR (or CHF if it shows), your card network like Visa or Mastercard will convert properly. I checked the numbers in my Revolut app, and it was a €9 difference on a €150 withdrawal. Always stay local currency.

At a LGT Bank ATM in Vaduz, I was surprised to see “Charge in USD or in EUR?” I had a US debit card, so I thought choosing USD would be safer. Big mistake-the ATM rate was terrible. Ended up paying $14 more on a $200 withdrawal. Always pick EUR in Liechtenstein (they use the euro in daily life even though CHF is official). Your own bank does the conversion fairly, while the ATM rate is just a rip-off.
