Looking for reliable ATMs in Slovenia that work well with foreign debit/credit cards and dont charge crazy fees. Any recos will be highly appreciated.
Just came back from hiking in Triglav National Park and found that Gorenjska Banka ATMs worked surprisingly well with my Monzo debit card. I used one in Jesenice and another in Radovljica, and both had fair fees (around €2.50) and no weird restrictions. In Ljubljana, I tried an Abanka ATM but it froze halfway through a transaction so I avoided them after that. For anyone relying on foreign cards, I’d say Gorenjska, NLB, and SKB are the safest bets for working machines and honest fees.
I spent two weeks in Slovenia and mostly used Intesa Sanpaolo Bank ATMs (previously Banka Koper). They accepted my Revolut card every time, even in smaller towns like Kranjska Gora. Intesa SP ATM don't charge a ATM access fee! 😁. I always declined the ATM’s conversion option and let Revolut handle the rate. Tried a few petrol station ATMs and those were unreliable or fee-heavy, so best to stick to major banks in town centers.
While road-tripping through Slovenia, I used my Canadian Mastercard at various ATMs, and the most consistent service came from Sparkasse, especially in Maribor and Bled. Their ATMs accepted both my credit and debit cards, and the fees were reasonable about €4 per withdrawal. I appreciated that the Sparkasse machines didn’t force me through any conversion traps. I’d avoid Euronet ATMs entirely they were all over tourist areas and had insane markups and fees.
I was in Ljubljana this spring and tried a few different ATMs with my Wise Visa card. The best experience I had was with NLB Bank (Nova Ljubljanska Banka). Their machines accepted my card without issue, the menus were clear in English, and the fee was only around €6.5. I used the NLB ATM near Prešeren Square and again at the train station both worked flawlessly.
Unicredit ATM in Slovenia - withdrew €500 with Maestro debit card, no extra cost. Reliable and safe.
