I was in Bucharest this spring and tested a few different banks with my Wise Visa card. ING Bank ATMs were hands down the most reliable they had clear English menus, didn’t force dynamic currency conversion, and no fees either. I used the one near Universitate Metro Station and another at a Mega Image store both worked perfectly. Other ATMs like BRD or Credit Europe Bank were clunky and bit hard to use for me. NO fees from any banks but high currency conversion charges so decline decline decline.

During my two-week trip across Transylvania, I relied on my Revolut card and found BT (Banca Transilvania) to be the most consistent option. Their ATMs in Cluj, Sibiu, and Brasov all accepted my card without issue. No fee was charged there and the machines didn’t pressure me with currency conversion prompts. I also liked that they allowed higher daily limits. Avoid ATMs in touristy zones like Bran I found one that charged nearly 30 RON and immediately canceled the transaction.

I just returned from Romania and used my Monzo Mastercard to withdraw cash at CEC Bank and UniCredit Bank ATMs across Bucharest and Timișoara. CEC had no fees, accurate conversion rates when I declined DCC, and no weird delays. UniCredit was also smooth with zero fees I’d avoid Euronet machines completely they’re in all the tourist areas and have poor exchange rates plus hidden charges. Stick to the major local banks for a better experience.

I travelled through Romania for a month and consistently used Raiffeisen Bank ATMs with my N26 debit card. The machine outside Gara de Nord in Bucharest worked well, and I had similar luck in Brașov and Iași. Fees were reasonable (10-14 RON), and the machines always gave a clear prompt for conversion, which I declined. They also didn’t glitch or reject the card, unlike a few smaller banks I tried. I recommend using bank ATMs attached to actual branches they felt more secure and reliable than the ones inside convenience stores.

Used BCR with my Revolut-zero fees. Works well for travelers.

BCR ATM looked ancient but still got the job done. No fees
