Is it safe to withdraw cash in Sweden or not?
I lived in Uppsala for a semester and often withdrew cash after dark, especially during winter when it’s dark by 4 pm anyway. Never once had an issue. Used Bankomat ATMs near student housing and the central station. I usually stuck with my Revolut card or sometimes my Danske Bank Visa. Everything is under CCTV and most machines are in bright public areas. Just avoid random ATMs inside quiet convenience stores or near parks. Sweden’s super modern, but still better to be aware of your surroundings late at night.
Last month I was in Malmö and had to grab cash around midnight near Möllevångstorget. Used a Swedbank ATM next to a 7-Eleven, lots of people around and good lighting. No problems at all. Sweden doesn’t have much street crime, and I had my N26 card in hand, didn’t linger. I wouldn’t say go pulling out cash in quiet neighborhoods or near train stations alone at 2 am, but generally speaking it’s one of the safer countries for this. Just use common sense and stick to ATMs attached to banks or supermarkets like ICA.
I’ve withdrawn cash late at night a few times in Stockholm and Umeå and never felt unsafe. Sweden’s pretty secure overall, especially in central areas. I used Bankomat machines outside SEB and Nordea branches near Drottninggatan after 11 pm. Well-lit, cameras visible, and always a few people walking around. Just avoid isolated spots or standalone Euronet ATMs in alleys. Used my Chase Sapphire Preferred and the transaction was quick. I kept my card ready and stayed alert but honestly felt safer than in most major cities.
Danske Bank ATM was super clean and safe. Everything worked perfectly. Usually safety isnt a problem in Sweden
Handelsbanken ATMs are available 24x7. Great for night withdrawals.
