Is it safe to withdraw cash in Norway or not?
I relied on card payments for most of my stay, but used a spare ATM inside a 7-Eleven once late at night. No issues at all. Machines here are modern and well-placed - even solo travelers should feel confident using them after dark.
Used an ATM in Tromso just after 9 PM - very few people around, but I wasn’t uncomfortable. The machine accepted my Wise card and had clear English instructions. Norway’s smaller cities still feel secure at night.
I was in Bergen and withdrew NOK after a late dinner. The Nordea ATM was outside a bank branch, under surveillance, and located near a tram stop. It felt totally routine - Norwegians treat ATMs like vending machines, day or night.
In Oslo, I used a DNB ATM on Karl Johans gate around midnight. The street was still lively, and the machine worked flawlessly. ATM safety at night in Norway isn’t something to worry about - crime is low, and banking infrastructure is strong.
