Is it safe to withdraw cash in Latvia or not?
In smaller towns, most banks close early and some ATMs aren’t 24-hour. I tried one in Cēsis around 9 PM and it had already shut down. Not a safety problem, but something to keep in mind if you're traveling across Latvia by bus or train.
ATMs are plentiful and modern in Riga. I used one inside the Origo shopping center that was accessible 24/7. Even at night, it had CCTV and felt very secure. Locals used it too - it’s just normal city behavior.
Used a Swedbank ATM in Jurmala just after dinner. The street was quiet, but I wasn’t alone, and the ATM worked with my foreign card. Latvia has a fairly low crime rate, but avoid backstreets or isolated suburban machines.
I was in Riga and used a SEB ATM outside a convenience store around 11 PM. It was well-lit, other people were walking past, and I felt fine. Withdrawing money after dark in Latvia, especially in the capital, didn’t pose any security concerns for me.
