Is it safe to withdraw cash in Croatia or not?

I was traveling solo along the Dalmatian coast and used ATMs at all hours. Even at night in Zadar and Šibenik, I found it totally fine. Most locals were out late anyway, especially in summer, so the streets were never completely empty. I always looked for ATMs attached to big banks like Zagrebačka Banka or inside shopping centers if they were still open. I never once felt uncomfortable. Just make sure to decline the currency conversion and keep an eye out for any skimming devices like in any country.

In Dubrovnik I took out cash from an OTP ATM around midnight right near the Old Town entrance. It was quiet but still a few tourists around. I wouldn’t say I felt unsafe, but I made sure to stay alert and not flash anything valuable. I always cover the keypad and keep my phone in my pocket until I’m done. Croatia isn’t known for street crime, but like anywhere, common sense goes a long way. I avoided stand-alone machines and stuck to bank ones near hotels or open stores.

I was in Rijeka for a week and often withdrew cash after dinner or late in the evening. No sketchy situations at all. I used a Bankomat ATM right next to a pharmacy, and there were people walking around, even kids. Croatia overall felt super safe compared to other places I’ve traveled. Just avoid isolated machines, especially those tucked away from main streets. The bigger cities have decent lighting and cameras everywhere, so I never felt uneasy using my card, even alone.

I used ATMs late at night a few times in Zagreb and Split and never felt unsafe. Most bank-affiliated machines like PBZ or Erste are located in well-lit areas, sometimes even inside glass ATM lobbies with cameras. I always stuck to machines outside actual bank branches or next to busy supermarkets. Wouldn't recommend using those freestanding Euronet ATMs on quiet corners late at night, though. Not because of crime, but they tend to be buggy and charge high fees. As long as you're aware of your surroundings and use machines in visible locations, it's totally fine.

Euronet ATM on the main walkway in Sutivan (Croatia) worked with both Visa and UnionPay cards. Located in front of a local shop - accessible and safe.

Used both Visa and Mastercard at Raiffeisen in Croatia - ATM worked fine with both. Safe location near the road.

Raiffeisen ATM in Croatia is in a good spot by the roadside. Easy to access by car and felt secure.

Zagrebacka ATM operates 24 hours and is well secured. Reliable option.
