Is it okay to use ATMs late in the evening in Italy or should I stick to daytime withdrawals only? I am a single woman travelling so want to be safe.

I was in Naples and didn’t feel comfortable using any ATMs late at night. Even in busy areas, things felt different after 8 or 9. I stuck to daytime withdrawals and kept some emergency cash in case I needed it. If you really have to get money at night, go with someone if possible or stick to ATMs inside places like airports, large hotels, or train stations where there’s security and cameras.

Used a Banco BPM ATM in Florence late one evening around 10. It was in a glass enclosure with a keypad entry and I felt okay because it was on a main street with people still around. That said, I wouldn’t use isolated ATMs after dark especially in smaller towns or near empty squares. Italy is generally safe, but petty crime like bag snatching does happen. Go during the day if possible or pick high-traffic areas.

I’m also a solo female traveler and kept withdrawals to daytime hours whenever I could. One night I used a UniCredit ATM near Termini station in Rome and it felt sketchy even though it was only 8 pm. Too many people loitering around. From then on, I used ATMs either in the morning or inside malls or train stations with security nearby. Safety first.

I traveled solo through Rome, Florence, and Venice and always tried to use ATMs during the day or early evening. It’s not that the ATMs themselves are unsafe, but some areas get really quiet at night. If you need cash late, use ATMs inside a bank branch or attached to a busy place like a supermarket. I used an Intesa Sanpaolo machine just off Via del Corso around 9 pm and felt fine because it was well-lit and near cafes.

PPD Sondrio has a 24-hour cash desk. Very helpful for night-time needs.

Heads up-BCC Roma ATM is not available 24/7. Was locked late at night.
