Is it okay to use ATMs late in the evening in Greece or should I stick to daytime withdrawals only? I am a single woman travelling so want to be safe.
On a ferry stopover in Naxos, I had to grab cash for a scooter rental. Used a Eurobank ATM near the port around 9 PM. The place was buzzing, no problem at all. Greece’s island ATMs tend to run out of cash by Sunday night, so if you’re moving between islands, get your money ahead of time during daylight.
I was staying in Heraklion, Crete, and tried withdrawing cash from a National Bank of Greece ATM after 11 PM. It worked fine, but I didn’t like how isolated the street felt. Not unsafe per se, just not comfortable. In smaller towns or islands, aim for daytime withdrawals - it’s just easier and feels more secure.
While traveling on a budget through Thessaloniki, I needed to grab euros late at night. The Alpha Bank ATM near the White Tower was my go-to - always worked, and the area stayed active. Most Greek cities are safe for night ATM use, but always stick to bank-attached machines. Euronet ATMs charge high fees and often lack nearby security.
I used a Piraeus Bank ATM in Athens’ Monastiraki district at 10:30 PM - still busy, well-lit, and no issues. Greece felt safe for night withdrawals in populated areas, especially near tourist zones. ATM safety at night in Greece is generally good, though I’d avoid deserted side streets or back alleys near metro stations.
Tried my Visa Barclaycard at Alpha Bank in Greece. Didnt work and the area didnt feel safe at night either.
Piraeus Bank ATM in Greece located next to Orange Cafe. Accepts Visa and Master debit cards. Easy access and safe.
Used a Volksbank card at Piraeus. No fee displayed on screen, which was sketchy.
NBG ATM worked with my UK card, but watch out-sketchy area and pickpockets about. Avoid at night.
