Is it okay to use ATMs late in the evening in Germany or should I stick to daytime withdrawals only? I am a single woman travelling so want to be safe.

In Cologne my hostel was near a Rewe with a Commerzbank ATM inside. That became my go-to after dark. I’d quickly pop in before heading back. Supermarkets, gas stations, and bank ATMs in bright areas are your best bet. If you’re unsure, withdraw a bit extra during the day so you’re not forced to find cash late at night.

I used an ATM near Hauptbahnhof in Hamburg around midnight. There were still people around and a few taxis waiting, so I felt okay, but I made sure to keep my card ready and didn’t count cash outside. I’d say use the same street smarts you would in any big city. If the ATM looks isolated or sketchy, skip it.

In Munich I only used ATMs that were inside Sparkasse or Deutsche Bank vestibules. They usually have a glass entry with lights and security cameras. Felt completely fine even around 10 or 11 PM. But in smaller towns, I tried to withdraw during the day just to be safe since streets can get empty pretty early.

I was solo in Berlin for a week and used ATMs at night a few times without issues, but I always stuck to machines that were either inside bank branches or right next to busy areas like train stations or shopping streets. I avoided the freestanding ATMs on quiet side roads. Most city centers are well-lit and active until late, so if you're in areas like Alexanderplatz or around central stations, it feels safe enough.

Euronet ATM inside a mini market in Germany. Market is closed Sundays, so ATM not accessible then.

Depends on the area, but in general safe. I used NORD/LB ATM zonewhich is open 24 hours a day. Super handy for night withdrawals.

Sparkasse ATM location was well-lit, safe, and had zero wait time. Great experience.
