Total nightmare in Valencia I had. I used an ING ATM outside a Carrefour to pull out some cash and the thing just ate my UK Revolut card. Didn’t even ask for a PIN. I walked into the ING branch when they opened and asked about it. They were polite but said they couldn’t retrieve it since it’s not their card. Said they would destroy it during the next ATM reset. I reported it as lost in the Revolut app within five minutes and ordered a new one. Honestly unless it’s your home bank there’s very little chance they’ll return a swallowed card in Spain. Just be quick to freeze it and move on.

So I’m in Barcelona and this happened to me yesterday near Passeig de Gracia. I was using my Indian SBI card and the Santander ATM froze mid-transaction and just kept the card. Total panic moment. I asked someone at a nearby shop and they said it happens more than you’d think. I went to the Santander branch next door and they said if it’s not their customer’s card they don’t return it. I had to block it using my bank’s app and now I’m using my backup Mastercard. If your card’s gone the bank probably won’t give it back unless you have an account with them.

Ugh this literally happened to me two days ago in Granada right near my hostel in Realejo. The CaixaBank ATM just took my German debit card and never gave it back. No message no beep nothing. I walked into the branch the next morning and the staff were helpful but said they could only return the card if it belonged to Caixa. Since mine didn’t they said it would be destroyed for security. I called my bank back in Berlin and blocked it immediately. Lesson learned always travel with a backup card and never count on getting it back if it goes into a Spanish ATM that’s not your bank.

CaixaBank ATM worked fine with my Revolut card. No complaints.
