My card was taken by an ATM near my hotel in Italy. Has this happened to anyone else? Solution?

Had this happen at a Banco BPM ATM in Milan Centrale. Card went in, nothing came out. I asked at the bank but they were super unhelpful because it wasn’t their card. They said they collect all swallowed cards and shred them unless it’s from their own customers. I used my Wise card after that with no issues, but definitely carry a second card and keep a bit of cash on hand in case something like this happens.

Same thing happened to a friend at an Intesa Sanpaolo ATM in Naples. No warning, no error, it just ate the card and said “card retained for security reasons.” Apparently if the ATM suspects anything suspicious, even a minor glitch, it keeps the card. He called his bank back home, blocked the card, and had to rely on cash for a few days. If this happens, report it to your card provider immediately and try to find a branch of the same bank. But chances of getting the card back are low if it’s not a local account.

My Revolut card got eaten by a BNL ATM in Bologna. I think the screen glitched and it just shut down mid-transaction. The bank was closed for the weekend so I couldn’t get help until Monday. In the end, they said they send foreign cards straight back to the issuer or destroy them. No way to get it back. I ended up using my backup card for the rest of the trip. Lesson learned: always carry two cards and take screenshots of your bank’s contact info before leaving.

Yes, this happened to me at a UniCredit ATM near the Trevi Fountain. I waited too long to take the card out and the machine swallowed it. Total panic moment. I had to go inside the bank the next morning with my passport and explain everything. They were nice but said they could only return it if it was a UniCredit-issued card. Since mine was from the US, they destroyed it. Had to call my bank and get a new one sent to my next stop.

PosteItaliane ATM in Italy ate my Revolut card. No support available - be very cautious using this machine.

The ATM at BNL was incredibly slow and ended up blocking my card right before my flight out. Terrible timing!
