My card was taken by an ATM near my hotel in Belgium. Has this happened to anyone else? Solution?
It happened to me at a Belfius ATM in Charleroi in June. I entered the wrong PIN twice and the machine claimed fraud so it swallowed my card to protect me. I went inside the branch right away, gave them my passport and within fifteen minutes they unlocked the ATM and released my card. I was advised not to enter wrong PINs more than twice since that triggers retention.
I had my RBC debit card captured by an Bancontact ATM near Brussels Midi. The screen went blank mid‑transaction. I waited ten minutes but nothing happened. I canceled the card through RBC immediately and called ING support the next morning. They said the ATM destroys swallowed cards for security, so they’d shred it. They sent me a replacement by courier to my hotel. I ended up using a backup TD Visa card instead. Always carry two cards and take note of the ATM’s support number .
I had it happen in Antwerp earlier this month used my Halifax Visa at a BNP Paribas Fortis ATM and it ate my card after I entered my PIN. It was late, so I couldn’t go inside. The next morning I went into the branch, gave them my passport, they looked up the incident, and handed me the card back within minutes. Lesson learned - always use ATMs inside banks during working hours and stay until the card pops out again otherwise the machine might swallow it for safety reasons
Worked perfectly at BNP Paribas. Even let me choose my bill denominations, which was super convenient.
This BNP Paribas ATM swallowed my card - second time in a month. Happened in Brussels, April 2024.
BANCONTACT ATMs in Brussels are outdated and constantly breaking down. Feels like theyre running on Nintendo 64s.
Saw at least 10 people in line at BANCONTACT. Busy and stressful.
Avoid BANCONTACT in Belgium - they took my foreign card and refused to return it. Total scam.
