Wondering if ATMs and places like restaurants shops in New Zealand easily take American Express or its better to get a Visa or Mastercard

I just wrapped up a 3-week trip across New Zealand, from Auckland to Queenstown, and while I love the points I earn on my Amex, I quickly found that Visa and Mastercard were much more widely accepted. Most major hotels and rental car companies took Amex, but when I tried using it at cafes, local restaurants, and even a petrol station in Rotorua, it was declined or came with a surcharge. I switched to my Visa debit card for 90% of purchases after the first couple of days. If you're relying on Amex, definitely carry a backup.
