Is it safe to withdraw cash in Tonga or not?
Tonga’s pace is slow, and that includes ATM services. I used the ATM inside a small post office after dinner. It was working, but locals said it often runs out of smaller notes. For night outings or ferries, prepare your cash during the day to avoid being stranded.
In Haʻapai and other islands, don’t expect to find ATMs open or even working late. I brought all the cash I needed from Tongatapu. There’s no crime to speak of, but you won’t find machines or support after dark. It's a planning issue, not a safety one.
I stayed near Vuna Road and used the ANZ ATM outside the hotel around 8:30 PM. It worked with my Mastercard, and a few other travelers were queuing. The interface was clear, and I saw no signs of tampering. Still, options are few - most ATMs are in the capital only.
In Nukuʻalofa, I used a BSP ATM near the main market at 9 PM. It was well-lit and there were still a few food stalls open nearby. ATM safety at night in Tonga felt very laid-back - locals were friendly, and I never felt unsafe. That said, after 10 PM, most of the town shuts down entirely.
