Is it okay to use ATMs late in the evening in Tuvalu or should I stick to daytime withdrawals only? I am a single woman travelling so want to be safe.
Tuvalu is incredibly laid-back, and there’s no real crime - but banking hours are strict. The sole ATM is locked inside a government office overnight. If you're arriving on an evening flight, make sure to exchange or withdraw earlier, or you’ll be stuck till morning.
I stayed near the airstrip in Funafuti, and needed cash after dinner - no luck. The only ATM was shut. Locals advised me to use it between 9 AM and 5 PM. Cash withdrawal in Tuvalu after dark isn’t unsafe, but simply not possible. Carry enough for evenings.
Tuvalu felt extremely peaceful, but I learned quickly that late-night ATM use is not a thing here. The National Bank’s ATM is inside a building that closes by 7 PM. Bring enough AUD and withdraw during the day - that’s your only reliable window.
Tuvalu only has a few ATMs - mainly in Funafuti - and none are 24/7. I tried to use one after 8 PM, but it was inside a locked government building. Is it safe to withdraw money in Tuvalu at night? It’s not unsafe - it’s just not available. Always get cash during working hours.
