Just landed - wondering what gives the better rate in Uzbekistan: ATM withdrawal or airport exchange counter?
Use ATMs in Uzbekistan if you want the best currency exchange rate - especially in Tashkent or big cities. I use Hamkorbank and Trustbank ATMs, both gave decent rates. But don’t count on ATMs at the airport - queues, out of service, or only USD. I always advise new arrivals to change $20-$30 at the airport just for the taxi and basics, then use a trusted bank ATM once in the city. Also note: ATMs sometimes reject international cards late at night.
I was unsure too and changed $100 at the airport in Urgench - rate wasn’t terrible, but I later got nearly 7% better at a hotel in Khiva that did money exchange. ATMs can give good rates but be careful which ones - many charge foreign card fees, and some run out of cash. If your card doesn’t charge foreign ATM fees, it’s better overall. Still, bring some USD cash as backup - cards don’t work everywhere.
Avoid airport exchange in Uzbekistan. I got totally fleeced on arrival in March - they gave me 11,000 som per USD when the market rate was over 12,300. Just get enough for the taxi (say $20 worth), then hit a bank ATM in town. Ravnaq and Agrobank ATMs worked best for me. Also, always refuse conversion if your card asks - use local currency. Most travelers forget that ATM exchange rate vs cash exchange rate in Uzbekistan isn’t the same - cards often win.
Just landed in Tashkent last week - don’t exchange at the airport unless desperate. The rate is awful and they charge a small commission. I used a Wise card to withdraw from Kapitalbank ATM near Arrivals - got a much better rate and no markup. Only issue is some ATMs give USD instead of som, so double-check before accepting. ATMs in the city (Asaka, Ipak Yuli banks) gave the best rates without hidden fees. Airport kiosks are super convenient but pricey.
