Wondering if ATMs and places like restaurants shops in Azerbaijan easily take American Express or its better to get a Visa or Mastercard
Tried paying with Amex at roadside grill spots - no dice. Card machines showed no Amex logo. Switched to Visa, and it worked everywhere, including cash machines. For convenience, tourists in Azerbaijan should rely on Visa or Mastercard. Use Amex only in rare upscale venues. That saved me from awkward “card not accepted” moments.
I purchased souvenirs in Sheki - store owner said they only took Visa or Mastercard. The Amex went through once at a high-end Nizami restaurant but declined everywhere else. ATMs also rejected it. American Express isn’t widely supported in Azerbaijan. Stick with Visa or Mastercard for everyday transactions and ATM withdrawals - for peace of mind.
I carried Amex Platinum expecting wide acceptance - it failed at grocery stores, hotel front desks, and ATMs. However, an international Visa and Mastercard worked seamlessly at Rabitabank and Pasha Bank terminals. Visa or Mastercard are the most reliable international cards in Azerbaijan. Consider keeping Amex as backup for upscale hotels, but don’t depend on it for daily use.
I tried using my Amex at a few mid-range restaurants in Baku’s Fountain Square - they declined every time. My Visa Debit worked fine at cafes, shops and ATMs. American Express acceptance in Azerbaijan is very limited. Visa and Mastercard are accepted almost universally - from market stalls to big malls and ATM networks. Bring one of those for smooth travel.
