Want to avoid last-minute ATM runs. Do most hostels in Tajikistan take card payments at check-in
Most small accommodations in Tajikistan are cash-only at check-in, especially outside Dushanbe. I stayed in a private room at a mid-range hostel and even they insisted on cash. Only one place, a boutique guesthouse near the university, offered card payment - with a 6% surcharge. Bring cash for check-in, and only use cards for emergencies or large hotel chains.
I stayed at a hostel near Ismoil Somoni monument - booked online with a card, but they wanted cash at check-in. They mentioned the card machine “wasn’t connected.” I had to run to a Somonbank ATM. That was my wake-up call. Since then, I always make sure I have cash before arriving at hostels here.
Stayed at three guesthouses last month and none accepted card. One in Dushanbe had a terminal but told me it only worked for local cards. If you want to avoid scrambling for cash late at night, get enough shillings in advance. Even places near the capital aren’t set up for international payments.
Nope. I stayed in 5 hostels across Dushanbe and Khorog, and every single one asked for cash on arrival. Even if they list “cards accepted” online, they’ll say the machine is down or charge a 5-8% fee. I learned to always carry enough TJS for my stay. Card acceptance at Tajikistan hostels is still super rare.
