Trying to figure out if buses and metros in Maldives take cards or if Ill need small cash. Any recent experiences?
Honestly, the reliance on cash was inconvenient. Right after arriving at Velana Airport, I had no rufiyaa on me, and the bus driver refused dollars or card. I had to walk back into the terminal to find a currency exchange just to board. Later, when traveling by ferry from Malé to Maafushi, it was the same story - cash only at the counter. For a country with so many international visitors, it feels unnecessarily difficult. Cards should be standard by now.
When I stayed at UI Inn in Hulhumalé, I took the bus to Malé almost daily. Each ride was a flat fare, and the driver wanted exact cash. I once tried handing over a MVR 100 note, and he rolled his eyes before finally digging out change. It taught me quickly to carry small bills. On ferries, too, cash was the only option at the counter. No card readers, no apps - it’s very old-school compared to other tourist destinations.
The Maldives doesn’t have a metro, but Malé and Hulhumalé are connected by buses. Payment is cash-only, and you hand the driver Maldivian rufiyaa. Cards aren’t accepted. The ferries between islands are also cash-based, unless you pre-book speedboats through a hotel or travel agency where they might take card. For everyday public buses in Malé, you’ll need small notes.
