Is it safe to withdraw cash in Taiwan or not?
I was in Taipei for a few weeks earlier this year and honestly felt safer withdrawing cash at night there than in most cities I’ve visited. Around 10:30 pm, I used an E.SUN Bank ATM inside a 7-Eleven near Xinyi, and there were people casually shopping, the area was well-lit, and the machine was inside the store with staff present. I still kept my bag close and made it a quick stop, but I never felt unsafe. Taiwan’s low crime rate makes it one of the few places where night withdrawals feel relatively stress-free just use indoor ATMs and avoid empty alleys.
During my trip through Kaohsiung, I had to grab some cash after dinner one night, around 9 pm. I was a little nervous at first, but I used a CTBC Bank ATM inside a 24-hour Carrefour supermarket. The whole place was lit up, there were staff nearby, and a security camera was clearly visible. I wouldn’t have used a freestanding ATM on a quiet street, but anything inside a convenience store or shopping center felt totally fine. Taiwan is generally super safe, but I still avoided carrying large amounts of cash after dark.
I’m a solo female traveller and just came back from two weeks in Taiwan Taipei, Tainan, and Hualien. I used ATMs at night more than once, usually inside FamilyMart or 7-Eleven stores. Even at 11 pm in Tainan, I felt comfortable because there were always a few locals around, and the store staff never made me feel on edge. I always chose ATMs with English menus and avoided withdrawing large amounts late. In general, Taiwan feels incredibly safe, but I still followed basic precautions like being alert and keeping my cash tucked away immediately after withdrawing.
I was in Taichung and Hualien this April, and I had no issues using ATMs at night but I was smart about where. I specifically looked for ATMs inside actual bank lobbies that allow 24-hour card access or at well-known places like MRT stations. One night, I withdrew money from a Taipei Fubon Bank ATM inside a shopping arcade around 10 pm, and it felt totally secure. The only time I felt slightly uneasy was at a less-trafficked 7-Eleven in a rural town, where I decided to wait until morning. Overall, Taiwan is super safe, but using indoor, well-lit ATMs is always the best move.

ATM was easy to use during the day, but I wouldnt recommend using Bank of Taiwan ATMs at night for safety reasons.
No cash available at Mega ATM on a random Saturday night. Frustrating!
