Is it okay to use ATMs late in the evening in Maldives or should I stick to daytime withdrawals only? I am a single woman travelling so want to be safe.
I stayed at a guesthouse on Ukulhas and found the one ATM on the island locked at night. Locals said it opens with the nearby office. Maldives is extremely safe, but ATM reliability is inconsistent once you leave the capital. For withdrawing cash after dark in Maldives, stick to major islands or hotel zones with 24-hour services.
While hopping islands, I learned fast that you can’t count on night ATM access. I was on Thoddoo and couldn’t find a functioning ATM after 8 PM. Even the shop owners didn’t take card. Always withdraw in Male or at the airport if you’re traveling to more remote islands - and do it during the day if possible.
In Male, I withdrew money at a MVR ATM near the fish market at 10 PM. Streets were busy, and everything felt safe. Maldives isn’t known for street crime, and the capital stays active into the evening. Most machines work fine at night, but be aware that some islands don’t have working ATMs at all.
I stayed on Maafushi Island and needed to withdraw cash after dinner. Used a Bank of Maldives ATM at 9:30 PM - it was outside a shop and had lighting. Felt safe, and there were still people around. ATM safety at night in Maldives is good in tourist islands, but avoid relying on cash access in the outer atolls after hours.
