This is unfortunately common in Uzbekistan. I work in Tashkent and I’ve seen it happen to tourists several times. Local banks are bound by regulations to destroy foreign cards. Even if the ATM is inside a branch, staff will usually tell you to contact your bank and block the card. You can request a new one via DHL or FedEx, which takes about 10-14 days. If you’re stuck, open a temporary local bank account with a UZCARD - not easy, but doable if you're staying longer.

I lost my debit card in an ATM outside a shopping mall in Bukhara. Locals tried to help, but the bank branch was closed for Navruz holiday. No hotline, no one picked up. Next day, I went in with my ID and they flat-out refused to return it. Uzbekistan doesn’t allow foreign card retrieval for “security reasons.” My advice? Use ATMs only during branch hours, ideally inside the bank building. It’s a tough lesson, but common here.

Had this issue near Shota Rustaveli Street in Tashkent - Ravnaq Bank ATM just ate my Wise card. Went to the branch next morning with my passport. They were helpful but couldn’t release the card due to Uzbek banking regulations. However, they confirmed it was inside and told me to cancel it immediately. Always keep a second card and try to use ATMs inside banks - you can get help on the spot if it jams or crashes.

Same thing happened to me outside the Hotel Uzbekistan in Tashkent last March. My card got stuck in an Asaka Bank ATM. I rushed into the branch, and luckily, the staff spoke some English. They said if the card belongs to a foreign bank, they legally cannot return it - even with ID. They destroy it after 48 hours. Best bet is to call your home bank, block the card, and request a replacement. Carry backup!
