My card was taken by an ATM near my hotel in Azerbaijan. Has this happened to anyone else? Solution?

I had my Discover taken by an AccessBank ATM near my guesthouse in Sheki. Luckily, I immediately called AccessBank’s emergency line and visited the branch with passport and withdrawal receipt. They retrieved it from the secure drawer within hours. Bank-lobby ATM card recovery works in Azerbaijan - but you must report it quickly. Avoid standalone ATMs to prevent permanent loss.

My Mastercard was eaten by a non-bank terminal tucked into a motel lobby - no branch, no phone, nothing. After reporting to my issuing bank, I confirmed the retention bin was emptied after 24 hours, and I never got it back. Card capture from non-branch ATMs in Azerbaijan often results in total loss. Since then I’ve only used ATMs located inside bank branches like AccessBank or Pasha Bank.

This happened to me at a Rabitabank ATM outside my hotel in Nizami Street. Between the card-snatching and the off-standby timer, I froze the card, called Rabitabank’s 24/7 maintenance number, and visited the nearby branch with ID. They stored the card in a secured chamber and returned it after verification the same afternoon. Drawing cards back from Azerbaijan ATMs is routine if it’s a branch machine and you act fast.

My Visa was swallowed by a Kapital Bank ATM near Fountain Square in Baku - no error, just silence. I called the hotline printed on the ATM, froze the card via my bank’s app, and went to the branch with my passport. They confirmed the card was in the jet retainer and processed release within a day. ATM card retrieval in Azerbaijan works best when using bank‑owned terminals. Always freeze it immediately, report, and head into the branch next morning.
