Looking for reliable ATMs in Tanzania that work well with foreign debit/credit cards and dont charge crazy fees. Any recos will be highly appreciated.

While travelling through Arusha and Moshi earlier this year, I found that CRDB Bank ATMs were the most consistent with my Revolut Visa card. No strange error messages, and they didn’t force dynamic currency conversion. They did charge a local fee around 12,000 TZS but the rate was reasonable. My best experience was withdrawing from a CRDB machine inside a Shoprite complex, where there was security and it worked on the first try.

In Dar es Salaam, I had a few failed attempts using my N26 Mastercard at different ATMs. The only ones that worked every time were the StanChart and Stanbic Bank machines. Stanbic at Julius Nyerere Airport gave me a better exchange rate than what I saw at currency exchange counters. The local fee was around 12,000 TZS, but that was still better than getting hit with poor rates. I suggest avoiding the standalone ATMs you see outside mini markets they often reject international cards or charge higher fees without warning.

I was in Zanzibar in May and had trouble finding ATMs that accepted my Canadian credit card. Eventually found a reliable NBC ATM in Stone Town that let me withdraw 200,000 TZS without any conversion prompts or network errors. KCB Bank also worked well with my Wise debit card, no fees charged, especially the branch ATM near the ferry terminal. My partner’s Amex didn’t work at all in Tanzania, so I’d recommend bringing Visa or Mastercard and using bank-affiliated ATMs during business hours for extra safety.

Just spent a few weeks exploring Tanzania’s northern safari circuit and relied heavily on ATMs in places like Karatu and Arusha. NMB Bank ATMs were hit or miss with my Monzo debit card, but Stanbic ATMs worked every time. I was able to withdraw larger amounts up to 400,000 TZS which helped cut down on repeated withdrawal fees. I also found that withdrawing inside bank branches (especially in Arusha town centre) was much more reliable than using hotel or petrol station ATMs. If you're planning your cash needs, stick with Exim, Stanbic, and CRDB for the best results.

CRDB Bank in Tanzania has a withdrawal limit of 400,000 TZS, not 1 million. It worked with both Visa Debit and Mastercard.

NMB Bank in Tanzania charges TZS 15,400 for every 200,000 TZS withdrawn. ATM worked well and felt safe to use at night with both Visa and Mastercard.

NBC ATM charged high fees-worked fine, but prepare to pay extra.

No commission or extra fees at DTB. I withdrew 400,000 TZS easily.
