Is it safe to withdraw cash in Uganda or not?
ATMs in Uganda often work, but electricity outages can happen unexpectedly. I once had my transaction interrupted mid-way. If you’re out past dark, make sure your accommodation can assist with small change or point you to a 24-hour ATM inside a guarded property. Outside of Kampala, options become much more limited.
I was volunteering in Fort Portal and used the ATM inside a Total fuel station a few times - but only during daylight. Locals there advised not to use any roadside ATM at night due to occasional petty theft. Even if it seems quiet, avoid solo late-night transactions.
In Jinja, I withdrew from an Absa ATM at around 7:30 PM. The area near the Nile bridge had light traffic and some tourists still moving about. The ATM worked with my international card, but felt slightly isolated. I’d recommend using ATMs attached to malls, hotels, or banks only.
In Kampala, I used a Stanbic Bank ATM at Acacia Mall just after 10 PM. There were security guards at the entrance, some late-night shoppers, and good lighting. ATM safety at night in Uganda can vary - urban areas like this are manageable, but I wouldn’t risk solo withdrawals in less developed neighborhoods.
