Is it safe to withdraw cash in South Africa or not?
Even in Stellenbosch, which felt calm, I stuck to withdrawing during the day. Card skimming and opportunistic thefts are still a concern in some parts - best not to tempt fate when there’s no crowd around.
Used an FNB ATM inside the OR Tambo airport late at night with no problem. It was well-lit and had cameras. That’s the best route if you're arriving late - airports and shopping centers are your safest bet.
I was in Johannesburg and avoided outdoor ATMs altogether. Locals strongly advised against night withdrawals unless you're inside a secure mall. That advice was echoed across the backpacker community.
In Cape Town, I withdrew rand from a Standard Bank ATM at the V&A Waterfront after 10 PM. There was security and lighting, so I felt okay. ATM safety in South Africa at night varies wildly - stick to monitored, commercial zones only.
