Is it safe to withdraw cash in Libya or not?
A local guide helped me withdraw money inside a hotel lobby ATM. That was around 8 PM and felt secure, but outside of those controlled environments, I’d avoid nighttime ATM use altogether. Conditions here can change quickly.
I was in Misrata, and the ATM near my hotel was out of service. Even during the day, machines don’t always work. After dark, many are shut off completely. Bring cash or ask your host for safe options.
ATMs are often unreliable in Libya - power outages, system failures, or cash shortages are common. I didn’t attempt any nighttime withdrawals. Locals rely on trusted shops for cash handling or exchange, mostly during the day.
In Tripoli, I used an ATM attached to a Bank of Commerce building just after 7 PM. A local friend accompanied me, which helped. ATM safety in Libya after dark is not ideal - not because of personal crime, but due to political instability and infrastructure limits.
