Is it safe to withdraw cash in DRC (DR Congo) or not?

Used an ATM once inside a luxury hotel, which worked at night - but elsewhere, machines were either nonfunctional or locked after business hours. If you're visiting, plan your cash needs early and use trusted exchange spots during daylight.

Tried to use a TMB ATM just after 7:30 PM in Goma - it was offline. A security guard advised me not to try others in the area due to safety risks. Withdrawing cash in DRC after dark is not recommended at all, especially if you’re new to the environment.

I didn’t even try finding ATMs in the evening. Most travelers I met either withdrew during the day or used USD cash brought from home. The machines I saw often had queues during the day and were shuttered at night.

In Kinshasa, I used a Rawbank ATM inside a guarded building around 6:45 PM. Locals insisted I avoid withdrawing money any later - even in decent neighborhoods. Nighttime ATM use in the DRC is highly discouraged unless you have local guidance and are in a secured zone.
