Is it okay to use ATMs late in the evening in Zambia or should I stick to daytime withdrawals only? I am a single woman travelling so want to be safe.
I withdrew cash around 9 PM from a Stanbic ATM in Lusaka. A few locals were using it too. Zambia felt chill, but I kept my transaction quick. Didn’t want to draw attention walking around with cash that late.
In Ndola, I found that most ATMs close access gates after 8 PM. I finally used one attached to a shopping plaza just before closing - guarded and well-lit. Honestly, withdrawing after dark in Zambia isn’t unsafe if you stick to secure spots, but it’s better to do it earlier.
While in Livingstone, I needed cash after dinner and used a Zanaco ATM outside a petrol station. Worked fine, though the area was quiet. No problems personally, but locals say petty theft can happen if you look like a tourist counting bills. Use machines in well-lit areas near supermarkets or hotels.
I used an FNB ATM in Lusaka’s Kabulonga neighborhood just before 10 PM. The street had restaurants open, a few guards on patrol, and decent lighting. The machine accepted my Visa debit card and dispensed kwacha with no fuss. ATM safety in Zambia at night is good in high-end areas, but I’d avoid downtown Lusaka after dark.
